Seiyuu: Inoue Norihiro

Sometimes referred to as the 'Buddha-like' second-in-comand, he is very gentle, and cares a lot about Tetsu. Like Hijikata, he is against the idea of giving Tetsu a sword, possibly because he feels partially responsible for molding Okita into the hitokiri that he has become.

He, Hijikata and Kondou are childhood friends, and he is (obviously) one of the founding members of the Shinsengumi, and though he is gentle, he actually dares to overrule Hijikata, even on major issues. He was the one to replace Serizawa Kamo, who was assassinated by the Shinsengumi in the Ikeda-ya incident.

He is good at accounting and always has an abacus close by, which he uses to scratch his back shake at people (i wanna do that! Can you imagine the looks people would give you?), and also to cheat in marathons.
