Though he's the Shinsengumi's commander, he plays a relatively minor role in the series and is often seen to be overruled by the dreaded Hijikata. He's much more tolerant of than Hijikata is of Tetsunosuke, as well as of Souji's childish antics. He is, however, more willing to take risks than Hijikata. For example: Episode 1, where Tetsu asked to challenge Okita. If Hijikata had been the one deciding, Tetsu would never have fought Okita. However, Kondou agreed for Tetsu to fight Okita, knowing full well that Okita could not adjust his strength.
